Communication Competencies- Foundations of Communication

Within the Foundation of Communication there are three domains that researchers refer to when studying the art of communication. Those are: communication pedagogy, developmental communication and instructional communication. Communication Pedagogy is "determining the correct way of teaching communication competencies"(Cooper & Simonds, 2011). Communication pedagogy is "studying effective ways of communication in a large multi-section lecture course." Simply put, communication pedagogy involves the study of communication and its effect on education. Developmental Communication is when communication is studied by a developmental scholar. For example, " how infants develop language skills" ( Cooper &Simonds, 2011). This area of communication focuses on child and adolescent development, but specifically in term of their growth in language interaction. Lastly, Instructional Communication is when scholars disect communication as it applys to education and the educational field. As stated by researchers Cooper and Simonds, it is how "communication effects teaching skills" and enhances the educational process ( Cooper & Simonds, 2011). All these three areas of study help illuminate the human need for communication and its effects on critical social processes such as eduction.
