Ethics and Diversity in Education

Ethical standards in education are pertinent to the success of a student and to a positive establishment of classroom management. Having ethical values enables a safe school atmosphere, where students are supported through a positive culture and an environment of mutual respect. Having ethical principals allows staff, teachers and administrators to actively promote and maintain this culture to ensure student accomplishment and achieve classroom management. I believe that when a school promotes student success, has set ethical standards for their students and staff it empowers the ideas of high achievement, which establishes a solid educational setting ( Cooper & Simonds, 2011).

One aspect of ethics which has become increasingly imporant in the modern world is respect for diversity. Currently, our American culture reflects the varied and multicultural ethnic makeup of our diverse nation. It has therefore become essential that teachers prepare and educate themselves to be able to address the diverse needs of a diverse culture. Cooper and Simonds claim that, "the values of the classroom are those of mainsteam America- independence, competition, individualism, and concern for relevance and application" (2011). Because students come from such diverse backgrounds, our public school classrooms must reflect respect, awareness, and compassion for all ethnic and cultural groups. This is a modern application for ethics that will continue to become important for teachers and administrators.
